Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Got questions about diesel engine parts? We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you better understand our products and how to maintain them effectively.
A diesel engine has an engine block, which houses the cylinders and crankshaft; pistons that compress the air-fuel mixture; a crankshaft that converts linear motion to rotational power; connecting rods that link pistons to the crankshaft; and a cylinder head, which contains valves and often the camshaft. Other important parts are fuel injectors for precise fuel delivery, valves to control air and exhaust flow, a camshaft to time valve movements, an oil pump and sump for lubrication, a cylinder head gasket for sealing, a flywheel for motion smoothing, and the exhaust system for emissions management. These parts make diesel engines work well and last a long time.
A diesel engine has three main parts: the cylinder, where air is compressed and burned; the piston, which is driven by the burning process; and the crankshaft, which turns the piston to make the engine move.
A car engine has many parts, including the cylinder block, cylinders, pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, valves, spark plugs, fuel injectors, gasket, timing belt/chain, oil pump, cooling system, air filter, and exhaust system. Each part serves a specific function.
The engine has parts like the cylinder block, cylinder head, pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, fuel system, air system, lubrication system, and cooling system. The cylinder block is the main body of the engine. It has cylinders inside.
There are three main types of diesel engines based on their size and power output:
Small Diesel Engines
Small diesel engines are used in light trucks, agricultural equipment, and construction machinery. They have lower power output compared to medium and large diesel engines.
Medium Diesel Engines
Medium diesel engines are commonly used in heavy-duty commercial trucks. They have higher power output than small engines but lower than large engines.
Large Diesel Engines
Large diesel engines are used to power trains, ships, and large generators. They have the highest power output among the three types. Some examples include engines used in freight trains, marine vessels, and power generation. In addition to size, diesel engines can also be classified into two main types based on the number of strokes:
- Two-stroke diesel engines complete a full cycle in two strokes of the piston.
- Four-stroke diesel engines complete a full cycle in four strokes of the piston.
Four-stroke engines are the most common type used in diesel trucks and automobiles.
There are two main types of diesel engines based on the combustion cycle:
Four-stroke Diesel Engines
- Most commonly used in vehicles and smaller applications
- Follows the typical four-stroke cycle of intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes
- Intake and exhaust valves are located in the cylinder head
- Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder
- Examples include engines used in cars, trucks, and generators.
Two-stroke Diesel Engines
- Used in larger applications like ships and locomotives
- Completes the combustion cycle in two strokes instead of four
- Intake and exhaust happens through ports in the cylinder liner rather than valves
- Requires a scavenge blower or compressor to charge the cylinders with air and assist in exhaust
- Examples include large marine and stationary engines.
The two-stroke design is simpler and more powerful for a given engine displacement, but has a narrower powerband less suitable for automotive use. Four-stroke engines are more common in vehicles due to factors like cost, weight, and the ability to vary engine speed.
